How to help during the holidays

Group of people volunteering during the holiday season

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance prides itself on helping our Hoosier communities all year long, but this holiday season the company especially wants to give back to those Indiana residents who need it most.

Part of holiday cheer is spreading it to those around you, including neighbors, friends and strangers alike. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance is proud to partner with nearly 100 nonprofit organizations in Indiana, and there are countless others doing important work in our state. If you’d like to give back this holiday season, we’ve got a few organizations and programs to share that could use your help!

Gleaners Food Bank

Gleaners Food Bank
is a fan favorite with Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance employees and agents. The organization was founded in 1980 and has grown to be the largest hunger relief organization in Indiana. By simply packing meals, sorting food donations or loading client vehicles at Gleaners, you’d be helping the one in eight Hoosiers who are facing hunger!

Indy Book Project

The Indy Book Project collects new and gently used books for children ages 0-18. The organization distributes the books to community centers, public schools, and other locations that serve youth. With three book drop-off locations in Zionsville, The Indy Book Project is bringing joy to little readers all over the Indianapolis area.

Firefly Children & Family Alliance

Firefly’s Hope for the Holidays
program allows donors to sponsor children and families for the holiday season from a personalized wish list. Items include toys, clothes, personal hygiene items and more. Bring purchased items to their drop-off location on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Street, Indianapolis and Firefly will deliver the gifts directly to the families. On top of contributing physical items, you can donate a monetary contribution that will go towards the items for kids that were not selected by a sponsor.

Coburn Place

Coburn Place
offers safe housing for domestic violence survivors and their children. Through offering children’s services, transitional housing and more, Coburn helps get those who need it back on their feet. Spend time this season volunteering with activities such as donation organization, furniture assembly, apartment set-up, cleaning or pantry organization.

Sheltering Wings

Sheltering Wings
is a shelter for all domestic violence victims in Danville, Indiana. They are a Christian organization who provide emergency shelter, life skills programming, youth services and more. Sheltering Wings accepts different forms of support, including monetary donations, a wish list of needed items in the shelter, vehicle and technology donations and more.

Want to help from home?

Give back from the comfort of your own home! Getting involved this holiday season doesn’t require leaving your house. The following organizations make giving back a little easier.

Cards for Hospitalized Kids

Getting your kids involved in giving back is a wonderful way to get them excited about helping others. Get creative with your kids this holiday season by making cards for children who will be hospitalized during the holidays. Cards for Hospitalized Kids sends handmade cards out to children’s hospitals in all 50 states, including Ronald McDonald Houses across the country. Their website includes writing guidelines, along with a mailing address for the cards.

They have created specific lists of their most needed items based on area, gender and age groups. Here is the Amazon wish list for men in Indianapolis, which includes undergarments, warm clothes, essential hygiene items and more. The list for women and children in Indianapolis includes diapers, children’s medicine, and small toys.
