Severe weather preparation: How to find a reputable contractor

Mar 13, 2025, 14:58 PM by Garrett Kelly
Severe weather season is just around the corner in Indiana. In a matter of minutes, Mother Nature can inflict considerable damage to homes, farms, businesses, vehicles and other property. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the steps to find a reputable contractor before severe weather hits.

Severe weather season is just around the corner in Indiana. In a matter of minutes, Mother Nature can inflict considerable damage to homes, farms, businesses, vehicles and other property. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the steps to find a reputable contractor before severe weather hits.

As the executive director of claims at Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, I see Hoosiers impacted by damage from wind, hail, lightning, flooding and tornadoes each spring. According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Indiana has experienced 1,500 tornadoes since 1950. In 2023, there were 54 tornadoes in the state.

Selecting a quality contractor can be a daunting task under normal conditions. Looking for a reputable contractor after experiencing storm damage comes with added stress and anxiety. However, if you learn and follow these guidelines, you will be less likely to hire a scammer or illegitimate contractor.

1. Get multiple bids

This first step is crucial. Each contractor will have varying prices based on materials and their methods of repairing the damage. Be diligent and get at least three bids for your project. That will give you a better understanding of fair pricing and help you avoid overpaying. Remember, the cheapest bid may not be the best option, and the most expensive bid doesn’t guarantee quality either. Take the time to review each bid's details by looking at materials, labor costs and the proposed project timeline.

2. Don’t rush your decision

It’s natural to want to complete repairs quickly after experiencing storm damage. However, rushed decisions may lead to costly mistakes in judgment. If a contractor pressures you to make a quick decision on a proposal, that’s a red flag. Trust your instincts and take the time needed to understand the proposal. Ask questions and get the answers you need before you commit to a contractor.

3. Be wary of the perfect proposal

Unfortunately, scammers prey on people after damaging storms roll through. They aim to take advantage of the chaos. If you receive a proposal that promises abnormally low prices, quick timelines and perfect repairs, do not take it at face value. The Better Business Bureau advises against hiring contractors who use high-pressure sales techniques, ask you to sign an insurance check over to them or request full payment up-front.

4. Ask for recommendations

You likely know a friend, co-worker or family member who has had to hire a contractor for repairs around their home. Take advantage of that trusted network. The people you have a personal relationship with are much more likely to provide an honest review of their experience. Your claims representative can help provide suggestions as well. At Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, our representatives work closely with contractors and know the warning signs of unreliable contractors.

5. Check the credentials

Before you enter a contract, ask for proof of insurance, licensure and additional credentials. A reputable contractor will have no problem providing this information. Knowing that these credentials are in good standing will help give you peace of mind as you make your hiring decision. During this step, ask for references or examples of their previous work.

Hopefully, you won’t experience storm damage this severe weather season, but it’s always best to have a plan in place. Remember to take your time, do your research and confirm those credentials. Following these steps will help you find a reputable contractor and receive the quality work you deserve.
